Saturday June 6^th commemorates the sixty fifth anniversary of the historic invasion of Normandy. D-Day (code name: Operation Overlord), was the single greatest military invasion in history as well as the single largest invasion of World War II (1939-1945).

 

The D-Day invasion combined the military operations of three countries: the United Kingdom, United States and Canada. The objective of the military operation, during WW II, was to successfully invade France with the ultimate goal of liberating Europe from the grip of Nazi Germany.

 

The invasion force included over 130,000 troops, and 7,000 ships (including 23 cruisers, 9 battleships, 104 destroyers, and thousands of support ships and landing crafts). The invasion was planned with the collaboration of the British and US Air Force.

The morning of June 6^th 1944 at 5:50am naval bombardment of the French shoreline began by taking out artillery placements and minefields on the beach. General Eisenhower, who became President in 1952, was the commander of the invasion. By May 7, 1945, Germany surrendered unconditionally to the Allie forces, thereby ending the war.

 

On that day Americans remember the sacrifice of these men who fought to preserve our freedoms. In just one day 10,300 allied soldiers sacrificed their lives to free western civilization of the tyranny of an evil Nazi empire. On this day, parents should particularly remind their children of the greatest privilege we have as Americans: our freedom.

 

In a now famous Normandy speech delivered on the 40^th anniversary of D-Day in 1984 President Reagan said that “for four long years, much of Europe had been under a terrible shadow. Free nations had fallen, Jews cried out in camps, millions cried out for libera-tion. Europe was enslaved, and the world prayed for rescue. Here in Normandy (France) the rescue began. Here the Allies stood and fought against tyranny in the giant undertaking unparalleled in human history.”

 

The significance of the event cannot go unnoticed. The World War II generation understands the significance of this day. Since many from that generation are dying off each day, it is their hope and the hope of many patriotic Americans, that all Americans will remember this day also.
