Bishop wants ban on VHP and Bajrang Dal

New Delhi: Aggrieved over continuing attacks on churches and Christian community in Orissa, a prominent Christian Bishop has demanded a ban on VHP and Bajrang Dal and alleged that Naveen Patnaik government in the state is not "not even doing minimum" to protect the community.

"Because of what they have done in the last few weeks, (we want a ban on) Bajrang Dal and even VHP which is very closely related to Bajrang Dal," Delhi Archbishop Vincent M Concessao told Karan Thapar's Devil's Advocate programme of CNN-IBN.

Concessao, the president of National United Christian Forum, said Christians in the country are feeling "insecure and scared" because the government "has not been able to protect them from atrocities". When pointed out that Patnaik has noted that he had done everything to protect the community, the Archbishop said, "not at all. Not everything. He has not even done the minimum that was required to protect the citizens."

Contending that those targeting churches are not the representatives of the vast majority of Hindus, he said that he has a "very clear" feeling these fringe groups which are carrying out attacks on Christians are not Hindus. "Hinduism has not to be identified as Hindutva. Hindutva has its ideology from West, from Hitler and Nazims, It has no roots in India, not in Hinduism," he said. "The problem is not just some incident here and there, behind them there is a very clear ideology and strategy...You can't just get hundreds of people together to attack some innocent people unless they are organised and motivated. And that's the ground work that Hindutva has done in the past several decades," he said.
