Plaid Cymru welcome pension changes - but slam cuts agenda
Thursday, 10.14.2010, 06:30pm
Plaid Cymru have welcomed a plan to cut pension tax relief to people on higher incomes. But they have reiterated their opposition to the cuts agenda as a whole.Plaid Cymru have welcomed a UK government plan to cut pension tax relief to people on higher incomes. But they have reiterated their opposition to the cuts agenda and made clear that their approval for this policy is an exception. There will be reductions in both the annual amount on which can be claimed, going from £255,000 p.a. to £50,000 p.a. and in the lifetime allowance which can be claimed, dropping from £1.8m to £1.5m.Plaid Cymru pointed out that the new policy is closer to their own policy, which they promoted at this year's UK general election.Plaid Cymru, whose name means “Party of Wales” in Welsh, is a socialist party working towards an independent Wales within the European Union.“Cutting back on the amount of pension tax relief to higher rate taxpayers is clearly the correct direction of travel,” said Plaid MP Jonathan Edwards, who was returned to Westminster for the first time this year.“£19 billion a year is spent on tax relief for pensions, with the government under-writing the amount of money that people save for pensions,” he explained, “Around half of this money goes to higher rate tax-payers, who are able to claim for their full 40 per cent or 50 per cent, whereas standard rate tax-payers are only able to claim back 20 per cent”.He emphasised Plaid's belief that, “Higher earners should not have additional support above and beyond what other taxpayers receive to save for their retirement”.He said that “ordinary taxpayers, struggling to get by” have been obliged to fund “gold-plated pensions” for those on higher incomes. But he added that “as with all announcements of this type, the devil is in the detail”, making it clear that he will be watching the government closely to check that the proposals are implemented fairly. This is a rare example of a cut welcomed by Plaid. Edwards described it as “far better than the savage cuts to public services that the ConDems are inflicting because of their other policies”.[Ekk/1]

Liberal Youth and Young Greens slam tuition fees plan
Thursday, 10.14.2010, 06:04pm
The youth wings of the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have attacked proposals - supported by LibDem and Tory ministers - to raise student tuition fees in England. The youth wings of the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party have both attacked proposals to lift the cap on student tuition fees in England. The strongly worded statement from Liberal Youth provides another embarrassment for Liberal Democrat ministers, who have allied with their Conservative coalition colleagues in accepting the plan. The organisation's vice-chair, Charlotte Henry, described ministers'refusal to rule out a fee increase as “regressive”.Meanwhile, Charlotte Dingle, co-chair of the Young Greens, said that, “rather than widening access to university, these proposals will make our already unfair system more elitist”.The two groups join a long list of youth and student organisation who have condemned plans for higher fees, including the National Union of Students (NUS) and the Student Christian Movement (SCM).Tuition fees at English universities are currently capped at just over £3,000. But the Browne Review into higher education funding recommended earlier this week that the cap should be abolished. The Business Secretary Vince Cable, a Liberal Democrat, said that the government accepted the “main thrust” of the proposals and legislation is expected to put them into practice. The coalition agreement allows Liberal Democrat MPs to abstain on issues of higher education funding, but it is now becoming clear that many will choose to vote against plans to raise fees.Julian Huppert, Liberal Democrat MP for Cambridge, told Ekklesia today (14 October) that, “I've been an anti-fees campaigner since I was an undergraduate. It's a pretty clear thing.”Asked if this meant that he would vote against the government, he said that the government had not formalised their proposals, but that he would certainly vote against them if they put forward the recommendations of the Browne Review.A significant rebellion by Liberal Democrat MPs raises the prospect of defeat for the government, as the Labour leader Ed Miliband has confirmed that Labour MPs will join with other parties, such as the Greens, in voting against the proposals.Martin Shapland, Chair of Liberal Youth, predicted that, “Higher fees will not be acceptable to grassroots Lib Dems and, I imagine, most of the parliamentary party”.He added, “You simply cannot build our future on debt. This move has the potential to cripple students with unprecedented levels of debt which will act as a real deterrent to those from poorer backgrounds seeking a better life through the education system.”The Young Greens'Charlotte Dingle predicted that the proposals would “lead to a two-tier system – one for the rich in elite universities, and a race to the bottom for the rest.”She criticised Tory and Liberal Democrat ministers for their acceptance of the proposals. But she attacked the Labour Party for introducing fees while in government and insisted that the Green Party is now unique in England in upholding free higher education.“We believe education must be free, equally accessible to all, ideologically independent and of high quality as well as meeting the individual developmental needs of each student,” she said.[Ekk/1]

Careers fair closed after arms trade controversy
Thursday, 10.14.2010, 04:33pm
A careers fair in Edinburgh was closed down last week after the organisers'decision to invite BAE Systems to the event triggered a protest by students.A careers fair at the University of Edinburgh was closed down last week after the organisers'decision to invite a multinational arms firm to the event triggered a nonviolent protest by students. The students laid down in front of the stall run by BAE Systems, one of the world's largest arms companies. The protesters included supporters of the Campaign Against Arms Trade (CAAT), who point out that BAE arms some of the world's most repressive regimes, including Saudi Arabia and Indonesia. They also accuse BAE of excessive influence within the UK government. The CAAT activists were joined by members of Students for Justice in Palestine, who are angry about BAE's sale of weapons parts to the Israeli government. The peaceful protest saw students waving banners reading “BAE – Blatant Absence of Ethics” as they chanted “BAE sells, Israel kills”. Police arrived as students laid down in front of the BAE stand.Security staff cleared the hall and closed the event for thirty minutes. No arrests were reported.A spokesperson for Edinburgh University told local student newspaperThe Journal, “The University attaches great importance to freedom of speech, as long as points of view are put across in a safe and lawful way”.Student Liam O'Hare told the same publication that BAE “are being given a platform to persuade people to join their company, and we are opposed to them being given that platform”. He said that the university was in effect still supporting BAE, despite having ditched its own shares in the company five years ago.CAAT recently launched a newBan BAEcampaign, aiming for an end to arms companies'presence at careers fairs. Students are expected to campaign against BAE at a number of recruitment events in the coming weeks.[Ekk/1]
